Movies That Make You Reminisce
Now and then we watch a movie that takes us back to times when everything was simpler and we were just going through life without the worries of adulthood with our friends. Recently, I had a moment where I was reminiscing about my time at Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School spending time with my friends without a care about what lay ahead. After watching a movie titled “Gangnam Girls” directed by Charmi Chheda staring Sadon Lhamo, Yangday La, Jurmey Choden Rinzin, Kelley Choden, Tandin Wangchuk, and Tshering Phuntso on the Samuh app.
The movie was about four high school friends who eventually fall out after high school. They decide to meet up one weekend and quickly realize that they still have a lot of pain and anger to resolve if they want to save their friendship. As I was watching this movie, I began to reflect on my days in High School and the friends I had. We used to make so many promises like “come hell or high water, we would never fall out and always stick together. It’s us against the world.” Like the friends in the movie who were known as “Gangnam girls”, our group was known as “Sora” which meant sky in Japanese. Unlike Gangnam girls, which consisted of four friends, ours consisted of eight friends, but our group also consisted of different personalities just like Gangnam girls. I can personally relate to the story as Sora also fell out after High School was over because of internal conflicts. The only difference I see is how the Gangnam girls reunite to get over their past issues and start over which we weren’t able to do. After watching this movie, I thought about my friends’ whereabouts, what had happened to them, and if they were able to or were still chasing their dreams. I wondered if they ever thought about our group or if they were too busy dealing with life. This movie has given me mixed emotions because I feel sad that my friends aren’t here with me now but I also feel happy that this movie refreshed my memories and I got to relive them through the movie. I wish the very best to all my friends and hope that just like Gangnam girls, we can also meet up soon, reminisce about our days in High school, try to move past unresolved issues, and start over. The actors have executed their roles so well that we, being the viewers, can relate so much to them; some may even feel like the actors are playing them This movie feels like a breath of fresh air for the Bhutanese entertainment industry because the idea, execution, the camera works, music and the story feels like it has never been done before. For those planning to watch this movie, I am sure you all will also be taken back to those times when everyone was happy and life was simpler. If you have lost some of your friends along the way and decide to watch the movie, you will be reminded of them and might even decide to get in touch with them. This movie is something we can all relate to because we have all lost some friends along the way and we rarely think about them and how they are doing or where they are. If you are one of the lucky few who still have your friends from way back in school, I suggest you watch this movie with your friends because you will have a great laugh reminiscing. I would now like to talk about Samuh because this streaming platform has been blowing my mind with content that I never thought was there in the Bhutanese entertainment industry. Samuh is giving a makeover to the entertainment industry with new storylines, new directors, introducing new faces, and fresh music which all the generations can enjoy too. It almost feels like Samuh is, dare I say, modernizing the Bhutanese entertainment industry, which has been long-awaited. So for all you guys who want to check out the Gangnam girls, it’s on samuh.
